Introducing the Spring 2026 Frank Rhodes Lecture Series Featuring Dr. Gerald Chan
The University Design Institute (UDI) at Arizona State University is pleased to announce the Spring 2026 lecture of the Frank Rhodes Lecture Series on the Creation of the Future, featuring Dr. Gerald Chan, co-founder and chairman of the Morningside Group. Dr. Chan will present a lecture titled “From John Dewey to Zohran Mamdani — The Future of Higher Education in America” on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. MST.
Higher education in the United States is at a critical inflection point. Public confidence in colleges and universities has reached historic lows, and incremental reforms are no longer sufficient. In this lecture, Dr. Chan will examine the structural deficiencies of today’s higher education model and argue for bold, systemic changes to realign universities with the expectations and needs of the American public.
Dr. Chan brings a rare and influential perspective to this conversation. A scientist and venture capitalist, he has founded and built more than twenty biotechnology companies and is widely sought out by university leaders around the world for his insights on innovation, governance, and institutional transformation. Educated at UCLA and Harvard University, Dr. Chan has received eight honorary degrees recognizing his leadership in science, public health, and higher education.
This lecture will be held in-person. Seating for this event is extremely limited. To ensure space is available for those who plan to attend, we respectfully request that in-person registration be completed only if you are confident you will be present.
A virtual attendance option is also available. Advance registration is required for both in-person and virtual participation, and event details will be shared with registered attendees.
