In May 2024, the ASU Leadership Academy celebrated the graduation of its eleventh cohort as part of Arizona State University’s mission to continue to advance its innovation efforts by investing in current and future leaders capable of advancing the goals of the ASU Enterprise.

The eleventh cohort of the program consisted of 34 faculty and staff who represented 20 units and academic colleges throughout the university. The year-long program provides a series of in-person workshops with sessions that focus on developing leadership skills, supporting individuals in advancing impactful projects, and establishing a community of leaders.

In the six months following the conclusion of the program, the cohort reported significant improvements in their leadership skills, professional development and building a network.

I am a firm believer in collaboration and the Leadership Academy gave me the skills and context I needed to be a successful collaborator at ASU.

Anita Huizar-HernandezAssociate Professor, School of International Letters and Cultures & Associate Director, Hispanic Research Center.

The Leadership Academy is one of three leadership development programs at ASU managed by the University Design Institute (UDI), including the Advanced Leadership Initiative and the Launching Leaders Program. To date, the Leadership Academy has empowered over 300 individuals, while the trio of programs has supported the professional development of more than 700 leaders from across Arizona State University.

Leaders at ASU recognize that the program delivers unique insight for participants. “We have had eleven leaders participate in this program over the years and their participation has been a fantastic addition to their ASU knowledge base and ability to work well across a highly matrixed university. Thank you for continuing this great program,” said Phil Regier, University Dean for Educational Initiatives & CEO of EdPlus.

At the heart of the program are three immersive, two-day off-site workshops that blend self-discovery with practical leadership tools. Participants complete a 360° assessment, select a personalized leadership activity to explore, and engage in peer coaching groups that support ongoing growth.

“This experience equipped me to lead more confidently and effectively and gave me the courage to pursue my new position as an assistant dean,” added Dani Sebbens, Clinical Professor & Assistant Dean for Practice and Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation.

The individual leadership projects, developed in collaboration with a nominator or supervisor, allow participants to put their learning into action. Each cohort member uses the project as a hands-on opportunity to address real needs within their units, fostering innovation, collaboration, and tangible impact. Projects for this cohort align with the three strategic focus areas in support of the public enterprise, detailed below.
