Introducing the Fall 2024 Frank Rhodes Lecture Series

Dr. Michael D. Smith, J. Erik Jonsson Professor of Information Technology and Policy, Carnegie Mellon University, Heinz College

What does it mean to truly embrace the Digital World? How will this impact the landscape of higher education? With total immersion can we truly guarantee access to all students in the scarcity-based education system? While ASU may be ahead of the game in terms of embracing the Digital World and inclusivity, what about the global landscape of higher education?

We will explore answers to these questions during the upcoming ASU Frank Rhodes Lecture Series Fall 2024 virtual Scholar Lecture delivered by Dr. Michael D. Smith, J. Erik Jonsson Professor of Information Technology and Policy, Carnegie Mellon University, Heinz College on Friday, September 13, 2024, from 2:00-3:30 pm MST (Arizona time)

Join us for the 8th thought-provoking lecture, “The Abundant University: Remaking Higher Education for a Digital World," where Dr. Smith will examine how higher education can fully immerse itself in the Digital World. Drawing upon his research and expertise, Smith will explain how higher education has been able to resist transformation and why current market forces make higher education ripe for disruption. Smith will then share his vision for a transformed higher education landscape that embraces this opportunity to create a more abundant system of education for the hundreds of thousands of deserving students who today are excluded from access to our scarcity-based system of education.

Program History

The Frank Rhodes Lecture Series aims to challenge the current constructs of higher education and disrupt the educational and cultural landscape by bringing thought-provoking leaders who can help redefine the space by sharing their visionary ideas and outlook.

President Michael Crow created the ASU Frank Rhodes Lecture Series in 2011 to honor Frank Rhodes (arguably one of the most impactful university presidents in the 20th century) and his extraordinary vision for higher education. In December 2019 the FRLS program became a part of the UDI portfolio. After an exhaustive program redesign, FRLS launched its first virtual lecture in December 2020 under UDI’s leadership.

As a catalyst for transformation in higher education, UDI aims to reimagine and innovate the landscape of higher education. The Frank Rhodes Lecture Series is just one of the many ways UDI advances its efforts to engage with experts by giving a platform to thought-provoking and visionary experts who strive to challenge, disrupt and redefine the status quo.

Since its relaunch in 2020, UDI has delivered seven virtual Scholar Lectures with more than 1,000 attendees from all over the globe. For more information and to view all of the previous lectures, visit the
