The Frank Rhodes Lecture Series - Fall 2023

The Frank Rhodes Lecture Series (FRLS) was created in honor of Frank H. T. Rhodes, arguably one of the most impactful university presidents of the 20th century. FRLS strives to challenge the current constructs of higher education and disrupt the educational and cultural landscape by bringing thought-provoking leaders who can help redefine the space by sharing their visionary ideas and outlook.

As a catalyst for transformation in higher education, FRLS is just one of the many ways UDI advances its efforts to engage with experts by giving a platform to thought-provoking and visionary experts who strive to challenge, disrupt and redefine the status quo.

The Frank Rhodes Lecture Series offers two separate lecture tracks, Scholar Lectures and FRANKx Lectures. While both share the goal to revolutionize higher education, the Scholar Lectures aim to bring external visionaries, and the FRANKx Lectures feature visionary leaders within ASU.

The first fall 2023 Scholar Lecture will be delivered virtually by Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, President Emeritus, UMBC on Friday 20, 2023 from 2:30-4:00pm MST (Arizona time). 

The lecture, “Leadership, Empowerment and Resilience in Higher Education: Reflections on the Past Fifty Years" will draw upon Dr. Hrabowski’s vast knowledge, experience and research, and will explore the importance of public universities in American society and throughout the world. The lecture will provide a robust exploration and discussion of a variety of current challenges in higher education.

This lecture will be hosted and moderated by Minu Ipe, UDI Vice Chair & Managing Director, with special remarks from President Crow.

The second fall 2023 Scholar Lecture delivered by Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean and Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law, UC Berkeley Law School on November 8. 

Erwin Chemerinsky is Dean and Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley School of Law. Prior to assuming this position, he was the founding dean of the University of California, Irvine School of Law, and a professor at Duke Law School, University of Southern California Law School, and DePaul Law School. He is the author of 15 books and over 200 law review articles. He frequently argues appellate cases, including in the United States Supreme Court. In 2022, he was the President of the Association of American Law Schools.

In this lecture, Chemerinsky will explore the concept of free speech on university campuses and what it means for students, faculty and staff. Chemerinsky will draw upon his many years of expertise and experiences as an educator, a leader in higher education and as a lawyer who has litigated high profile cases about speech on campus. Chemerinsky will identify what campuses can and can’t do to protect free speech, while also safeguarding their students, faculty and staff. In addition to providing clarification of the law, Chemerinsky will also share examples from his own work and provide a “from the trenches” firsthand experience, in the hopes of encouraging dialogue.
