The University Design Institute

Driving Innovation in African Higher Education

The University Design Institute partners with public systems, regional institutions, and policymakers to advance higher education through digital resiliency, capacity building and leadership.

The University Design Institute (UDI) at Arizona State University is advancing a bold vision for higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa — one that is designed by Africans, for Africans. Through long-term partnerships with universities, ministries, and foundations such as the Mastercard Foundation, UDI supports institutions across the region in building resilient, digitally enabled systems that expand access, drive economic mobility, and prepare the next generation of leaders.

From co-designing digital transformation roadmaps in Ethiopia, Ghana, and Uganda to supporting Vice Chancellors in South Africa and launching innovation alliances for youth employment, our work combines global expertise with local leadership. By centering African voices and leveraging cutting-edge tools, we help shape a higher education ecosystem that meets the urgent needs of today and unlocks the full potential of tomorrow.

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program e-Learning Initiative

Arizona State University partnered with the Mastercard Foundation to collaborate with universities in Benin, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lebanon, Rwanda, and Uganda to advance digital transformation, enhance institutional resilience, and develop innovative models for higher education.

ASU will be the implementing partner for Phase 2 of the
Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program e-Learning Initiative. The University Design Institute will lead the implementation of Phase 2, which will include multiple ASU units.

Transformation Roadmap workshops

As part UDI's work in Phase 2 of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program e-Learning initiative, we are conducting Transformation Roadmaps with each of the 10 participating institutions to shape their Phase 2 priorities. This workshop brings together leadership, faculty, staff, students, and other key stakeholders to assess the institution’s current state, envision the desired future, and align around shared priorities. Following the workshop, each institution will produce an implementation plan focused on five critical areas of digital transformation.
