18 Graduate from the Advanced Leadership Initiative Cohort IX
The Enterprise Design Practice at the University Design Institute builds ongoing design and leadership development capacity at Arizona State University for continuous and sustained innovation.
Following six months of immersive development, 18 faculty and staff members from across Arizona State University have completed the Advanced Leadership Initiative (ALI) - an executive leadership program designed to prepare high-potential leaders for long-term, enterprise-wide impact.
Now part of a growing network of more than 120+ alumni, this ninth ALI cohort represents a cross-section of 12 ASU academic and administrative units. Participants spent the semester engaging in three intensive workshops, receiving one-on-one executive coaching, and learning directly from ASU’s senior leadership. From shadowing campus executives to participating in high-level strategy sessions, fellows gained a deeper understanding of the university’s operations and the unique responsibilities of institutional leadership within ASU’s Public Enterprise model.
The most impactful aspect of my Advanced Leadership Initiative experience was the opportunity to build authentic relationships with colleagues from across the University. Together, we explored and interrogated our values, reflected on our leadership tendencies, and gained new tools to help us thrive within the ASU context. The intentionally curated module workshops, shadowing experiences, and executive coaching were invaluable components that will continue to shape my personal and professional journey.

“Surrounded by a diverse cohort of academic and administrative leaders, I found tremendous value in sharing and hearing stories of growth, challenge, and resilience,” said Binil Starly, Motorola Professor and School Director in the Fulton Schools of Engineering. “A key lesson I’m taking forward is the importance of leading with intentionality, especially when shaping new academic cultures and building something from the ground up. I have shifted my mindset from being primarily an architect of new academic programs and infrastructure to being a builder of culture and people.”
Managed by the University Design Institute, ALI is one of three flagship leadership development programs alongside the ASU Leadership Academy and Launching Leaders Program. Collectively, these initiatives reflect the university’s ongoing commitment to cultivating visionary leaders capable of driving innovation and transformation.
The graduating fellows leave the program equipped with refined leadership skills, a broadened institutional perspective, and a strong peer network to support their continued growth and contributions to ASU’s mission as a New American University.
“The Advanced Leadership Institute demonstrated the incredible investment ASU makes in developing leadership to live up to our Charter. I appreciated that the program was not just an investment in us as individual leaders, but also helped each of us understand how our roles and work contribute to the broader mission of the University to take fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural, and overall health of the communities we serve. ALI brought together academic leaders and staff leaders so we could develop our leadership skills together and build a network that allows us to think about our contributions across the academic, learning, and knowledge enterprises to really understand what it means to lead in the new American University,” said Shannon Portillo, Director and Coor Presidential Chair, School of Public Affairs, Watts College of Public Service.
