Arizona State University Welcomes Dr. E. Gordon Gee as Distinguished Fellow in Residence at the University Design Institute

Gee will join UDI as a Distinguished Fellow in Residence, advancing American higher education leadership and The Co-Lab@UDI

Dr. E. Gordon Gee, one of the most influential higher education leaders in the United States, has joined ASU’s University Design Institute as a Distinguished Fellow in Residence.

Dr. Gee will advance UDI’s efforts in American higher education leadership, share his insights and expertise through The Co-Lab@UDI, and support the broader mission of transforming higher education to expand access, increase social mobility, and strengthen national progress.

“Gordon Gee brings a wealth of experience and perspective from his decades leading higher education throughout the United States,” said ASU President Michael Crow. “He has navigated the most complex challenges facing our sector while keeping institutions aligned with their public mission. His involvement with ASU and the University Design Institute strengthens our ability to develop leadership capacity and institutional models that will prepare universities across the nation for the demands of the future.”

Gee has served as president or chancellor of leading U.S. universities for more than four decades, including West Virginia University (two terms), The Ohio State University (two terms), Vanderbilt University, Brown University, and the University of Colorado Boulder. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the nation’s top 10 university presidents. More recently, Great Value Colleges recognized him as the nation’s top university president.

As a Distinguished Fellow in Residence, Gee joins UDI’s global network of fellows and experts, contributing to advancing new models of leadership and institutional transformation in higher education, both in the U.S. and worldwide.

“Gordon Gee’s leadership has left an indelible mark on American higher education. His experience and vision will be a tremendous asset to the University Design Institute as we continue advancing innovative models and preparing institutions for the challenges and opportunities ahead,” said UDI Vice Chair and Managing Director, Minu Ipe.

Gee is the co-author of more than a dozen books including recent publications “What’s Public about Public Higher Education,” “Leading Colleges and Universities” and “Land-Grant Universities for the Future”. In addition to his higher education leadership, Gee also serves on the Board of Trustees on the National 4-H Council and the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America. He has served as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee and is a Big 12 representative on the College Football Playoff Board of Managers. Gee is a member of the Center for Economic Development Task Force on Building a More Civil and Just Society, and an inaugural member of the Education Advisory Board (EAB) Presidents Advisory Council.
