Shaping the Future: Inclusive Visioning at Barrett, The Honors College

Barrett, The Honors College was established in 1988 at ASU. In June 2022, Dean Tara Williams became the third dean and first woman to be appointed to the college. She has prioritized crafting an inclusive and dynamic mission and vision that reflects the next generation of students as a critical first step in her leadership journey. In support of Dean Williams' goals, in partnership with UDI, she created an enduring vision, mission, and values statement that was reflective of the many diverse voices across campus. UDI designed and delivered a multi-month series of listening sessions that gathered perspectives from individuals who were internal and external to the college. This information was synthesized and integrated into community-wide discussions with students, staff, and faculty. This holistic approach to co-design ensured an outcome that was inclusive and responsive to the current and future state of the college.

UDI facilitated 17 listening sessions with 137 students, faculty, and staff, generating several thematic areas that were transformed into actionable insights. A multi-day retreat resulted in college identity development. This was coupled with interviews with key leaders from across ASU.

The process was designed so thoughtfully and implemented so expertly that the experience itself transformed our community.  The resulting vision, mission, and values are already strengthening our college’s sense of purpose and generating new energy and ideas for how we support Barrett students.
